  • Inspiring the black vote
  • If Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman really wanted to pass his proposed income tax increase, perhaps he should have put it on the ballot last November.

  • Has the CPD let Comfest go too far?
  • Jim Gilbert is fairly pissed about the three-day Community Festival, better known as Comfest, which is held annually at the city’s Goodale Park on the last weekend of June. The president of the local Fraternal Order of Police union said this year’s stabbing death of 18-year-old Bryan Barbin, whose death police say may have been drug-related (autopsy and toxicology reports from the Franklin County Coroner’s office were not available at press time), brought to light one very controversial aspect of Comfest: Unmonitered illegal activity in a public park—starting with open drug use.

Man, woman arrested as suspects in series of car break-ins

Powell police arrested a man and a woman after they stole clothing and compact discs, together worth $260, from a vehicle parked in the 4000 block of Landhigh Lakes Drive. The two suspects also were found to have been responsible for several other recent car break-ins, police reported.

Man in car solicits teenager, police report

Worthington city police reported at 7:24 p.m. June 24 that a man in a red car approached a 15-year-old girl in the 300 block of West Dublin-Granville Road and asked her to get in his car.

Anna and the Annadroids: Shop, shop, spend, spend, dance, dance

Anna was trying to describe the T-shirt dresses she and the other Annadroids modeled in the window of G&Co. during Saturday’s Gallery Hop.

              Andy Shaw Band

Ask a simple question, get a simple answer, right? That’s not the case if you ask Andy Shaw to describe his band’s sound. “We usually call it reggae rock, but it’s really a mix of a lot of stuff,” he said. “It can go everywhere from pop, to rock, to reggae, to jazz and blues. We try and meld everything together. But the simple explanation is reggae rock,” Shaw said, pausing a moment before adding, “pop.”Label them as you will, but don’t dismiss them as another sloppy-stoner-band mucking through old Sublime covers.

              Matt Monta

When describing his project, Columbus’s Matt Monta said he wanted to “create a sound that’s American…that resonates with American roots...It’s folk, blues, a little bit of country, maybe some rock ’n’ roll, too,” he said. At their best, Matt Monta and the Hot Coal Band play like a five-headed, gin-drunk hound dog growling in the face of contemporary over-produced plastic-pop music.

              Super Desserts

The Super Desserts sat down  to describe their unconventional approach to gigging in Columbus and penchant for unique instrumentation in their own brand of happy pop music. What do they sound like? A smiley-happy Sufjan Stevens listening to the Beach Boys on a sunny day.

              Two Cow Garage

Andy Schell, Shane Sweeney, Micah Schnabel, Chris Flint and Cody Smith make up Two Cow Garage, a balls-to-the-wall band that has been playing Columbus and touring the rest of the country for years. Their brand of gritty alt.rock sounds a lot like Bob Dylan, if good ol' Bobby started out at CBGB's instead of the Gaslight Cafe.

              Josh Krajcik Band

Josh Krajcik (vox, guitar, piano), Mitch Pinkston (bass) and Corey Gillen (drums) form the three-piece Josh Krajcik Band, who recently supported Gran Bel Fisher on his US tour for about a year. Now they're back in Columbus, playing a blend of dark roots rock, blues and soul.

              Paper Airplane

Launched in early 2005, the group—which also includes Caleb Bandy (bass) and Teresa Kent (keyboards, vocals)—is writing and performing some of the best indie pop in Columbus. And that’s a good thing, considering the amount of bad indie pop that’s oozing from butt-hurt wannabe poets from the ‘burbs.

TOP Live & Local: Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk

Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk, a band with a name long enough to leave you tongue-tied, is a collection of "troubadours specializing in backcountry wailin', flatpickin', and hokum" says the band's website.

              The Wet Darlings

The Wet Darlings are a hybrid of indie rock and soul with big guitar sound, sultry vocals and soulful harmonies; and describe their sound as "sex-pot rock." They sat down  at Circa Studios for an exclusive interview and performed unplugged versions of two songs from their upcoming self-titled EP.

              Dane Terry

Dane Terry is a Columbus native who majored in Orchestral Composition at The Ohio State University before deciding to try his hand at what he calls "neo-vaudeville," piano-based cabaret-rock. He now hosts a live monthly variety show at James Club 88, plays in the band Wartime Ladies, and performs all around Columbus.

              UP: Influence of alcohol

Anheuser-Busch InBev said Wednesday that it will sell its packaging plants, including the plant in Columbus, to Colorado-based Ball Corp. for $577 million to help pay off debt. The news was confusing to many Columbus residents, who were unaware that alcohol could be used to pay off debt rather than to soothe the burden of it.

              DOWN: Aquatic vertebra

The day after supporters for Issue 1 rallied around a tax increase at Whetstone Park, hundreds of fish were discovered floating belly-up in the park’s casting pond. Clintonville residents were horrified to learn the animals had not adapted a tolerance to the damaging affects of all the hot air from City Hall.

              Your Opinion

Why do you go to Comfest?
              To watch the bands
              To see naked breasts
              To channel my inner hippie
              To get wasted
To use conciousness raising as a social tool
